Toning vs building muscle mass A common misconception is that weight training will result in the development of big, bulging muscles. In fact, the ultimate shape of your muscles is determined by five factors: 1. The number of repetitions of an exercise you perform. Fewer repetitions (6 to 9) at a heavier weight will build muscles; 8 to 15 repetitions at a lighter weight will tone. Choose a weight that is heavy enough to make the last repetition a challenge. 2. The number of sets of an exercise you perform. Do one to three sets for toning and a minimum of three sets for building muscle mass. 3. Genetics. 4. Testosterone. Testosterone controls the development of muscle bulk. 5. Drugs and performance enhancers. Use of these is extremely risky and not recommended.
